Mindful Mummys

Practical coping skills for new mums

Mindfulness for New Mums

About Mindful Mummys

Becoming a mummy is both a reward and a challenge. It involves major changes in your lifestyle, your body, your relationships, your career, and even your identity.

There are lots of courses around for new mummys, many of which focus on the day to day care of your baby - feeding, sleeping patterns, etc. Mothers groups often provide new mummys with a sense of support during this time. But there are very few - if any - professional, evidenced based courses on how mummys can learn to adjust and thrive in their new role.

Mindful Mummys is a 6-week group program developed and run by clinical psychologists. It teaches practical skills to help you to be present, stay calm and connect with yourself and your baby through the ups and downs of early motherhood.

Mindful Mummys is based on effective therapeutic techniques including mindfulness and cognitive behaviour therapy. These techniques aim to enable you to stay present in your body, and with your baby; to become aware of unhelpful thinking patterns and feelings, and to learn new, effective ways to deal with them. Mindful Mummys focuses on building self-compassion and kindness.

Our Mindful Mummys group will improve your ability to deal with challenges and stress and to get less caught up in negative thinking patterns. Mindfulness will also teach you to be more aware of the deep joy that motherhood can bring. Above all, Mindful Mummys is about developing self care.

As part of the Mindful Mummys program you will be provided with a goodies pack which includes a cd of short mindfulness exercises and meditations, a copy of the wonderful book 'Mindful Motherhood' by Cassandra Vieten, and some delicious pampering products just for you. We will also take a break in the middle of each group session to allow you to connect with other mummys, ask the facilitators any questions, and have a relaxing cup of herbal tea.

The Practicalities

When does the group start?

Groups are currently running and will continue to run throughout the year. Call our office to learn when the next group is due to start.

How long does the group last?

The Mindful Mummys group runs for six weeks. Each session runs for one and a half hours.

Can I bring my baby?

Babies are notorious for not behaving themselves during group sessions! We see the group as an opportunity for mummys to take a well deserved break from baby. It is easier to learn the skills with your full attention, so that you can take them back into your life with confidence.

How much does it cost?

The course cost is $550. This cost covers the 6 group sessions, a mindfulness practice cd, a copy of the book "Mindful Motherhood", and a pamper pack. Refreshments are provided at each session.

Are any rebates available for the group?

Medicare rebates may apply to this group. This means that if you have been experiencing levels of distress adjusting to motherhood your GP can refer you to attend the group and Medicare will subsidise a substantial portion of the per session cost back to you. The total amount you can claim back for group sessions is $175.20, which reduces the cost of the course to $374.80.

Where is the course run?

Mindful Mummys is at Self Essentials, located at 5 Darvall St Balmain NSW.
